Voices from our outreach

In their own words, filmed at our October outreach: the people we served, and the doctors and health workers who served them.

What people said

“I have been seeking how to get glasses, because I don’t have the money. I cannot read, I can’t see far. Today, people are giving me joy that I never expected. You people have added joy in my life.”

BeneficiaryReceived free reading glasses

“Today I received free medical care, and I also got my eyes checked for free. I want to encourage them not to relent in the good work they are doing.”

BeneficiaryFree check-up and eye test

“Most of the cases we had were blood pressure. Those with high sugar levels were advised to go to the hospital. We had enough drugs to give people, and eyeglasses for those who needed them, mostly the elderly.”

Volunteer health workerOctober outreach team

“I’ve never felt this well treated in my lifetime. They are so friendly and so helpful, and the doctor prescribed drugs for me, all for free.”

Young beneficiarySeen by a doctor

“This is my first time attending, and these are my drugs. I really appreciate it. May God replenish them.”

BeneficiaryFirst-time visitor

“Look at my eyeglasses, what they gave to me. They are such beautiful people, they are wonderful. I thank God for them.”

BeneficiaryReceived free glasses

“The medication was free, so it was really nice. I pray they do this again in future to help the community.”

BeneficiaryFree medicines

“Apart from sickle cell, we found other life-threatening conditions, like a patient whose blood pressure was very, very high. Bringing this to the community is an opportunity to save lives.”

Volunteer doctorOctober outreach team

“They have professional doctors. The medical treatment was free, and the drugs are free too.”

BeneficiaryFree treatment

“I really had an amazing day coming to this place, and they gave me medicine. Thank you very much.”

Who we are

We believe no one should suffer in silence from sickle cell disease. So we take free care, education and hope to the people who need it most.

The Okeoghene Samuel Eterigho Sickle Cell Awareness Foundation was started in April 2022 by Mr and Mrs Sylvester and Erezi Joice Eterigho, in memory of their son Okeoghene, who passed away from complications of sickle cell disease in December 2019.

We raise awareness, educate communities and give medical and emotional support to people and families affected by sickle cell, while caring for the wider health of every school and community we visit.

About 1 in 4 Nigerians carries the sickle cell trait (AS), often without knowing it.A simple genotype test tells you whether you are a carrier.

When two AS carriers have a child, there is a 1 in 4 chance in every pregnancy that the child will have sickle cell disease.Check your chances with our genotype checker

A message from our founder

“From this deep loss came the resolve to transform grief into action and pain into purpose.”

On 18 December 2019 I lost my beloved Okeoghene to complications from sickle cell disease. In April 2022 we started this foundation so that others would not have to face the same struggles alone.

Through free medical outreaches, health education and advocacy, we are breaking the stigma and bringing care and hope to families across Nigeria. I invite you to join us.
